The Mascot opens with a mother and doll maker at her sewing machine, sad because she cannot afford to give her child the orange she desires. As she is sewing together a toy dog, one of her tears falls on his heart and brings him to life. The dog comforts the young girl and when shipped away his adventure begins. This dog puppet, Duffy, would appear in another later Starewicz film.
